Ralph Hasenhuttl applauds Southampton’s “outrageous” character in 3-2 win at Tottenham

Ralph Hasenhuttl expressed his delight at Southampton‘s “outrageous” character to come from behind twice and win 3-2 in dramatic style away at Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.

Armando Broja‘s sixth Premier League goal of the season in the 23rd minute cancelled out a Jan Bednerek own goal five minutes earlier, before Son Heung-min controversially restored the host’s advantage with a 70th-minute strike.

However, the Saints fought back with two goals in four minutes from Mohamed Elyounoussi and Che Adams, the latter heading in an 82nd-minute winner to claim maximum points in North London.

Hasenhuttl, who was celebrating his 500th game as a manager, believes his team’s performance was “by far the best” since he took charge in 2018, and he was impressed with their never-say-die attitude to turn the game on its head.

“I didn’t know that this was the 500th. It is definitely one of the better ones,” Hasenhuttl told BBC Sport.

“I think we played fantastic football today and I think we deserve to take something even if it’s a point I would be happy… but because of the chances we had, definitely we deserve to get something.

“We believed in us, and the mentality and the character of the team at moment is outrageous. It is fantastic to watch the group on the pitch. Everybody knows exactly what he has to do, they are fighting for everything, and we played fantastic football.

“We played 23 passes before we scored the second goal, I mean, this is fantastic. The whole performance today was by far the best since I’ve been here.”

Southampton have now moved into the top 10, 11 points clear of the relegation zone and eight points behind Spurs in seventh place.
