Liverpool break all-time club goalscoring record in Southampton rout

Liverpool have set a new club record in the Premier League after seeing off Southampton 4-0 at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Jurgen Klopp‘s men were ahead within two minutes thanks to Diogo Jota‘s opener, and the Portuguese attacker added another before Virgil van Dijk and Thiago Alcantara rounded off the scoring.

Liverpool kept up their remarkable streak of scoring at least twice a game on Merseyside, and Klopp’s crop have also earned their own personal slice of history this weekend.

The Reds’ rout of Southampton saw them hit 39 goals from their opening 13 games of the 2021-22 league campaign – their best-ever tally at this stage of a top-flight season.

Liverpool are unsurprisingly the highest scorers in the Premier League this term – boasting nine more strikes than leaders Chelsea – and they have closed the gap to the Blues to one point following Saturday’s success.

Mohamed Salah set up Jota’s second on the day for the Reds, seeing him hit 150 goal involvements in just 171 Premier League matches.
