Carlo Ancelotti: ‘Marco Asensio exit would not force us into transfer market’

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has insisted that his side will not bring in a new attacker this summer even if Marco Asensio leaves before the transfer deadline.

The 26-year-old’s contract at Bernabeu is due to expire at the end of the campaign, and he is currently being strongly linked with a move away from Los Blancos.

Manchester United and Arsenal have both been credited with an interest in the Spain international, and Ancelotti recently said that the attacker was looking to leave the club before the end of the transfer window.

The Italian was again asked about Asensio during his press conference on Saturday and said that the player was “evaluating his situation” in the Spanish capital.

“I don’t know anything new about Asensio, he is evaluating his situation. On September 2, everything will be clear and if he stays he will be an important player. I will be delighted because last year he contributed a lot,” Ancelotti told reporters.

However, the Los Blancos has coach said that his side would not be signing a replacement for Asensio if he were to depart before the end of the window.

“I have Mariano [Diaz], but he has the best in the world ahead of him. We have a team in which we have a lot of resources. If Marco goes out, we’re not going to sign anyone because we don’t need it,” he added.

The 26-year-old was a regular for Real Madrid during the 2021-22 campaign, making 42 appearances in all competitions, contributing 12 goals and two assists in the process.

Asensio has only played seven minutes of La Liga football this term, though, with Federico Valverde and Rodrygo above him in the pecking order for a starting role on the right.

Ancelotti also confirmed that Dani Ceballos would be staying at the club this summer despite being strongly linked with an exit during the current window.

“Ceballos is going to stay. He will have more minutes because he deserves it,” the Italian said when asked about the midfielder’s immediate future at Bernabeu.

Ancelotti also insisted that Rodrygo would “play a more important role” for the club this season, with the Brazilian battling for a spot in the first XI.

“Rodrygo is going to play a more important role because last year he made a difference in important matches and will start more. He will play on the right side and will replace Vinicius [Junior] on the left, even replace Karim [Benzema]. He is very complete,” said Ancelotti.

The 21-year-old featured for Los Blancos in the UEFA Super Cup against Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this month, but he has missed the team’s two La Liga matches this season against Almeria and Celta Vigo through injury.

Real Madrid will be bidding to make it three straight league victories at the start of the new campaign when they make the trip to Espanyol on Sunday night.
