Brentford looking to equal 83-year record against Chelsea

Brentford will be looking to equal an 83-year record when they square off against Chelsea in the Premier League on Wednesday evening.

The Bees have endured somewhat of a mixed start to the new Premier League campaign, despite sitting in ninth position in the standings after 10 matches.

Brentford are yet to record successive victories in the top flight and have put together three-match winless streaks on two occasions.

However, as well as having the opportunity to prevail for the second time in a row having defeated Brighton & Hove Albion on Friday, the Londoners have an opportunity to equal a long-standing mark against their neighbours.

Thomas Frank‘s team will be looking to record successive league victories against Chelsea for the first time since February 1939.

During the 1938-39 campaign, Brentford prevailed 1-0 at home before emerging victorious by a 3-1 scoreline at Stamford Bridge four months later.

Those two wins represent almost half of Brentford’s total triumphs over Chelsea in their history, and just one success has come in nine games since the win on away territory over eight decades ago.

However, that occurred as recently as April 2 this year as Brentford recorded one of the most eye-catching victories of the entire season.

Despite going behind to a long-range Antonio Rudiger strike, Frank witnessed his side move 3-1 ahead less than a quarter-of-an hour later, Christian Eriksen getting on the scoresheet either side of Vitaly Janelt‘s double, before Yoane Wissa completed the sensational rout with three minutes remaining.

Nevertheless, history is not in Brentford’s favour for a number of reasons, including Chelsea winning games at the Gtech Community Stadium in the Premier League and EFL Cup during 2021.

Furthermore, Chelsea have posted victories in nine of their last 10 London derbies, and they are unbeaten in such fixtures throughout 2022.
