Rangers, Napoli fixture rescheduled to Wednesday night

Rangers, Napoli fixture rescheduled to Wednesday night

RangersChampions League contest with Napoli, which had been due to take place on Tuesday, has been put back 24 hours until Wednesday night at 8pm.

A statement on the Scottish club’s official website said that “severe limitations on policing resources and organisational challenges” following the death of Queen Elizabeth II had led to the decision being made.

“Rangers can today confirm the upcoming UEFA Champions League match with SSC Napoli at Ibrox has been rescheduled for Wednesday, 14 September at 8pm,” read the statement.

“This is due to the severe limitations on policing resources and organisational challenges related to the ongoing events surrounding the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

“Rangers, of course, recognise this switch in date will inconvenience a number of our loyal supporters, and refunds will be available to those unable to attend the match.”

The statement also revealed that no away supporters would be allowed to attend the match, but it will be the same for the return fixture in Naples.

“Additionally, no away supporters will be present at the match, allowing the club to make additional tickets available to MyGers members as a priority,” continued the message.

“UEFA have also confirmed that as a matter of sporting integrity, no Rangers fans will be permitted to attend the return fixture in Naples.

“The club can only apologise for any inconvenience caused by the most unique and sad circumstances which are beyond our control.”

All Scottish domestic football over the weekend was postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Rangers opened their 2022-23 Champions League group-stage campaign with a 4-0 defeat at Ajax last week, which followed a 4-0 loss to rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

Napoli, though, made the perfect start to their Group A campaign, running out 4-1 winners over Liverpool.

The Italian giants have now won their last three matches in all competitions, having also recorded a 1-0 victory over Spezia in Serie A on Saturday.

Rangers are set to return to Scottish Premiership action against Dundee United next weekend, while their next Champions League fixture after the clash with Napoli will be against Liverpool at Anfield on October 4.
