Manchester United looking to equal all-time unbeaten record held by Liverpool

Manchester United could equal an all-time English football unbeaten record currently held by Liverpool when they face Aston Villa at Villa Park this afternoon.

The Red Devils meet Villa for the second time in the space of a week, having beaten Steven Gerrard‘s side 1-0 in the FA Cup at Old Trafford on Monday night.

Man United will now make the return trip looking to extend an unbeaten record at Villa Park which stretches back to a 3-0 League Cup defeat in October 1999.

Since then, Man United are unbeaten in 22 away games against Aston Villa, winning 17 and drawing five – just one game short of the all-time English football record when both sides have been in the top four tiers.

Only Liverpool have had a longer such unbeaten streak, going 23 without defeat away to Sunderland between 1959 and 2002.

Villa’s record in the league alone is no better having gone 22 top-flight home games without a win against Man United since 1995 – the longest such streak in Football League history.

Another victory for the 20-time champions on Saturday would see them record their 300th Premier League away win too, a landmark no other team has achieved in the competition’s history.
