Kevin Trapp comments on Manchester United speculation

Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp has admitted that it is “nice” to discover that he has been linked with a move to Manchester United.

The Red Devils are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper to provide competition for David de Gea, after allowing Dean Henderson to join Nottingham Forest on loan for the 2022-23 campaign.

United are understood to have drawn up a long list of goalkeeper targets, with 32-year-old Trapp recently emerging as one of several names on their radar.

According to SPORT1, United have offered Trapp a salary worth between €10m (£8.4m) and €11m (£9.3m), and they have ‘promised’ the shot-stopper regular first-team football at Old Trafford.

However, Trapp refused to be drawn on speculation over a summer switch to the Premier League giants when questioned by reporters on Tuesday.

“As I said during my first spell at Frankfurt, it’s always nice when rumours like this come out. It’s a nice acknowledgement. But I can’t say anything about it,” Trapp said at the SportBild Award show in Hamburg.

Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krosche was at the same event as Trapp and insisted that the Eagles are yet to receive an approach for the goalkeeper from any club, adding: “There is no offer so far and no contact with United.”

Meanwhile, Frankfurt head coach Oliver Glasner has expressed his desire to keep hold of Trapp, who has two years remaining on his contract.

“From a sporting point of view, I would of course like to keep such a great goalkeeper and person,” Glasner told reporters.

“He is a great role model and always one of the first to arrive at training. But I’m not the final decision-maker.”

Trapp began his professional career with Kaiserslautern before spending three years with Frankfurt between 2012 and 2015.

The six-cap Germany international then moved to Paris Saint-Germain and won 14 trophies with the French giants, including three Ligue 1 titles, before returning to Frankfurt in 2018.

Trapp has made a total of 261 appearances for the Eagles across all competitions and played a crucial role in helping the club win the Europa League final on penalties against Rangers last season.

The German is not the only Bundesliga goalkeeper to have been linked with Man United, as Borussia Monchengladbach‘s Yann Sommer is also believed to be on their radar.

In addition, Benfica stopper Odysseas Vlachodimos has recently emerged as a potential target for Erik ten Hag‘s side, while Leeds United‘s Illan Meslier is also admired by the Red Devils, but the West Yorkshire outfit have no plans to sell the 21-year-old.
