Chelsea making progress in bid to sign Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile?

Chelsea are allegedly moving closer to securing the signing of Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile.

During the summer, the Blues made every effort to significantly strengthen their backline courtesy of the departures of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger.

Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana were signed in their place, while Marc Cucurella is capable of playing on the left-hand side of a back three if required.

However, Chelsea have largely looked poor in defence during 2022-23, even if Kepa Arrizabalaga put together a run of five clean sheets at one stage.

Although just 17 goals have been conceded in 14 top-flight fixtures, four strikes were recently shipped versus Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea have lost four of their last five games in all competitions.

Last week, it was claimed that the West Londoners were attempting to rectify the situation by pushing through a deal for Badiashile.

In a further update from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are now in advanced talks with Monaco and the Frenchman.

While it is indicated that negotiations are ongoing, Chelsea are said to be willing to pay in the region of €35m (£30.8m) for the 21-year-old.

Badiashile is largely regarded as one of the best defensive prospects in world football, despite missing out on a place in his country’s World Cup squad.

Sixteen appearances have been made for Monaco in all competitions during 2022-23, while he also started two of France’s games in the UEFA Nations League.

However, Monaco are at a point where they must consider selling one of their most prized assets, who has just over 18 months remaining on his contract.

As has been the case with other recent deals, the Chelsea hierarchy are bidding to steal a march on their rivals to bring in yet another top young talent.

Chelsea are also on the brink of signing Vasco da Gama teenager Andrey Santos and Molde forward David Datro Fofana, with each deal potentially being finalised before the end of the year.
