Andrew Robertson sets new Premier League assist record

Andrew Robertson has set a new Premier League record for the most assists in the competition’s history by setting up the opening goal in Liverpool‘s match against Aston Villa this evening.

The left-back teed up Mohamed Salah‘s goal to break the deadlock after only five minutes at Villa Park, latching on to Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s defence-splitting pass before cushioning the ball across the face of goal to leave Salah with a simple finish.

The assist was Robertson’s 54th in the Premier League, moving him out on his own ahead of former Everton man Leighton Baines as the defender to have created the most goals in the competition.

Robertson has reached his tally in 231 matches, whereas it took Baines 420 games to chalk up his 53 assists.

The Scotland international’s mark could eventually be under threat from his Liverpool teammate Alexander-Arnold, who already sits third on the all-time list with 45 to his name.

Salah’s goal, meanwhile, moved him level with Sir Kenny Dalglish as the seventh-highest scorers in Liverpool history with 172.
